Course Overview

The two-day course will deal with many of the deterioration mechanisms of concrete that can make a reinforced concrete structure partially or totally unusable, aesthetically unacceptable or unsafe. The incidence of acidic gasses in the atmosphere is increasing steadily and is able to reduce the ability of concrete to protect steel reinforcement. The mechanism is not clearly understood by designers and contractors, and will be explained along with the cause of many other aggressive factors that act on concrete

Where does the responsibility of a consulting engineer or contractor end?  On the completion date, at the end of a maintenance period or when the structure requires maintenance some 50 years after construction. From whom can the client claim costs of repair at that stage?

Concrete is subject to deterioration due to several factors ranging from abrasion of floor surfaces, exposure to acids and corrosion of steel reinforcement. Proper specification, testing and workmanship can prolong the useable life-span of reinforced concrete structures.

  • An awareness of concrete deterioration and how to avoid many of them by proper specification and workmanship
  • Protection of structures and prolonging their life-span in the interests of the client
  • Expertise in the design of concrete mixes to promote impermeability and resist the ingress of chloride ions or acid gasses
  • An understanding of concrete surface finishes to promote abrasion resistance

Outline

  • Constituent materials for concrete and their effects, particularly cement extenders such as Blastfurnace slag or Pulverised fuel ash
  • Aggregates and their influence on shrinkage, elastic modulus, alkali aggregate reaction, water demand, absorption and cracking
  • Properties of concrete in the plastic, green and hardened states and site operations in each state to prolong the life-span of concrete

Session Duration: 3 Hours of Live Training

Deterioration mechanisms on hardened concrete

  • Mechanical deterioration such as cracking, abrasion, salt crystallisation, freeze thaw, thermal cracking and modulus of elasticity
  • Environmental factors such as acidic gasses and chlorides
  • Erosion by moving water and attack by pure water
  • Additional stresses due to structural misalignment
  • Interface between different materials and fire damage
  • Durability testing for protection of steel reinforcement

Session Duration: 3 Hours of Live Training

Detection and repair of concrete defects

  • Visual examination
  • Concrete sounding and half-cell measurements
  • Use of covermeter, strain gauge, Schmidt hammer, pull-off test
  • Repair of defects, repair of cracks, removal and repair of defective concrete, surface preparation and repair materials

Meet the Instructor

Bruce Raath

The well-known international lecturer Bruce Raath, has Membership of Institute of Concrete Technologists (London) and Assoc. Membership of the Institution of Structural Engineers (London). This combination of qualifications gives him a clear insight into the relationship between the behaviour of materials, and the modification of the constituent materials to produce a high quality structure on behalf of the client.

 

Bruce Raath matriculated at the Durban High School and obtained a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal in 1970. He worked for the then South African Railways for a period of 10 years doing both maintenance and construction work. After a period in consulting with Webb and Partners in Durban, he lectured at the Durban University of Technology (then ML Sultan) and was senior lecturer in structural design and theory of structures. In 1998, he was co-founder of the concrete testing and consulting firm Contest in Durban until he re-joined the C&CI as Education and Training Manger in 2006. He has since retired from C&CI and formed his own consulting and training practice in construction materials and structures
