main changes to pMI 2021 exam

PMI® rolled out new changes to the PMP® exam based on thorough research into how the project management profession has evolved since the last changes made in 2015. Two significant changes include:

PMP Exam Format

The new exam is comprised of 180 questions, which need to be answered within 230 minutes (two 10-minute breaks are allowed) Questions will be a combination of multiple-choice, multiple responses, matching, hotspot and limited fill-in-the-blank.

 

PMP Exam Content

While the old exam focused mainly on the stages of a project, the new one encompasses everything and everyone involved, namely:

  • PEOPLE – 42% of items on the exam, emphasizing the skills and activities associated with effectively leading a project team. 
  • PROCESS – 50% of items on the exam, reinforcing the technical aspects of managing a project.
  • BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT – 8% of items on the exam, highlighting the connection between projects and organization strategy.

Course requirements

  • Delegates wishing to pass the PMP exam – To apply for the PMP, you need to have either a secondary degree (high school diploma, associate’s degree, or the global equivalent) with at least five years of project management experience with 7,500 hours leading and directing projects and 35 hours of project management education, or a four-year degree (bachelor’s degree or the global equivalent) and at least three years of project management experience, with 4,500 hours leading and directing projects and 35 hours of project management education.

  • The PMP® exam, administrated by the Project Management Institute (PMI, can be taken at a Pearson Vue center or as a proctored exam (on your computer from your own home/office, etc.).
